Nature Trails East
Quincy, Illinois, USA
🥾 About This Trail
This area remained relatively undisturbed and was once part of one of the original farms settled in this part of Illinois. The Quincy Park District obtained ownership and made plans to keep it in its natural state while allowing limited access to the public allowing for preservation of river bottom habitat.
This area of Illinois differs from most of the state as it remained untouched by glaciation. While the majority of the state is relatively flat ,this are has many hills, and lowlands. The Mississippi River formed a large area of flatland between the “bluffs” over time. This area floods on a regular basis ,but remains dry most of the growing season. The habitat is unique and mostly occurs in the middle latitude’s of the river. These areas have been greatly affected by the installation of the lock and damn system that regulates the river level for navigation.
