🥾 About This Trail
The Jackson County Greenway (JCGW); a paved, one mile, all accessible path is located between the towns of Sylva and Cullowhee, in the mountains of western North Carolina. The trail is managed by the Jackson County Park & Recreation Department and is open year-round.
As an all-accessible paved trail, the JCGW provides a self-guided forest bathing experience for a wide range of ages and mobility needs. The paved trail travels adjacent to the Tuckasegee River, through a rich riparian and deciduous forest ecosystem. An abundance of wildflowers, ferns, trees, songbirds, wading birds, spring greens, fall colors, winter views, and the soothing sound of moving water provide a relaxing setting for a self-guided forest bathing experience.
Accessible restrooms and parking are located at the Locust Creek Trailhead. Accessible parking is located at the Monteith Gap Trailhead. The self-guided brochures are available at both trailheads. Use the invitations in this brochure to help you connect with the land, water, air, plant, and animal beings. Mile markers are posted every ¼ mile with benches and picnic tables where you may pause. There are covered and uncovered pavilions where you may also linger for an invitation. For an alternative path, you can explore the soft surface nature trail which branches off from the main paved pathway and follows close to the river. You can choose invitations that fit the places where you pause. Use your senses to guide you as you connect with the natural spaces along the trail. Take your time and lean into whichever invitations you choose. You are invited to explore a small section of the greenway or wander the entire length.
Nearby, the town of Sylva offers shopping, coffee shops, breweries, galleries, and casual restaurants. Cullowhee is the home of Western Carolina University, hiking and mountain biking trails, casual eateries, and a multi-purpose recreation center.
