🥾 About This Trail
Fish Hatchery Park is named for the fish hatchery that once stood close to one of its boundaries – beside Jackson Creek near its confluence with the Applegate River. The hatchery was in operation from September 1912 until the summer of 1936. It handled coho salmon and steelhead trout and, until 1921, chinook salmon. Hungry people lined up at the hatchery when it was open, each person with a gunny sack was given one fish. Some days 500 people stood in line. The hatchery closed in 1936 – a casualty of the Depression of the 1930s.
This location offers several open water riparian areas including the Applegate river, and a creek. Ecotones include the riparian areas, mix of conifer forest, oak woodland, oak savannah, manzanite brush, and grasslands. This is a great park for migrating birds, animals, and takes visitors through a wide variety of habitats.
